Day ends early for Team Jeg's

Denver, Sunday: NHRA's most competitive professional class ended their first battle of the weekend at the conclusion of the fourth and final

qualifying session Saturday afternoon by setting the field for the Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals. A total of 29 drivers batted for their space in the

16 available qualifying positions. Jeg Coughlin Jr. and his familiar yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order Chevy Cavalier started race day from the

    No. 10 spot.

The weather conditions changed dramatically for race day. The clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped over 10 degrees.

The mountain at Bandimere Speedway is known for throwing curve balls to even the best engine tuners and crew chiefs.

In the opening round Coughlin squared off against Warren Johnson. The match up not only pitted a Chevy Cavalier and Pontiac

Grand Am against each other, but it put two of Pro Stock's rival families head-to-head in another classic match up of power house teams.

There was not much difference between the two lanes. Lane choice went to W.J. and he rolled into the right lane. The starting line

advantage went the Jeg's machine by .027 seconds (.444 to .471). The cars were door handle to door handle rocketing to the big end.

The win light went to W.J. by .0048 seconds at the stripe. Jeg posted a run of 7.301 at 189.28 mph.

"I over ran first gear and it hurt us all the way down the track," said Jeg. "We had an opportunity to gain some ground in the points today.

Our car was capable of winning this weekend."

Coughlin looking for second win of the year in Colorado

Denver, Saturday: Team Jeg's driver Jeg Coughlin entered Saturday's morning qualifying session comfortably in the top half of the

quick 16 Pro Stock field for the Mopar Parts NHRA Mile High Nationals. The morning track conditions were favorable despite ever

increasing temperatures. Several perennial favorites were outside of the quick sixteen, and were expected to take their best shots

    in the day's first session.

Jeg Coughlin posted a solid 7.300-second pass at 188.91 mph in his Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier.

"It was a pretty solid run for us, although I have to admit that it felt a little better than what the scoreboard indicated," said Jeg.

"The car left well, and felt smooth from the drop of the throttle to the pull of the chutes. It was still a solid pass down the track,

and it yielded some good data for us to tune from."

The afternoon continued to beat down relentlessly on the quarter mile strip at Bandimere Speedway as the Pro Stock

class took to the pavement for the fourth and final qualifying session. Little shift in the field of 16 was anticipated as the

increasing temperatures and diminishing air quality played havoc on the naturally-aspirated 500 cubic inch big blocks.

The yellow and black Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier responded well to the heat. Jeg tripped the beams with one of the quicker runs

of the session in 7.371 seconds at 187.23 mph.

"The conditions in the final session were pretty similar to what we will likely face in eliminations tomorrow," said Jeg.

"We made a nice solid pass down the track in the heat of the day and that's what we were after. We'll take a look at all of our

notes and do the best job that we can preparing the Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier for eliminations."

Jeg will face off against Warren Johnson in Sunday's first round of eliminations.

Team Jeg's off to solid start on the mountain

High temperatures and blue skies set the stage at Bandimere Speedway for the first day of pro qualifying for the

Mopar Parts Mile High Nationals. Jeg Coughlin entered the event the most recent winner on the 23-race circuit with a victory in

St. Louis just a few weeks earlier. Jeg was hopeful for a good start to the weekend as he began his quest for another victory on the mountain.

Jeg's hopes were realized in the day's first session. The Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier posted the third best time of the round with a

solid pass of 7.381 seconds at 187.29 mph.

"We knew that it would be pretty important to get off to a good start," commented Jeg. "The high altitudes that we encounter at this

facility are unlike anything that we face all year. The earlier you can get a handle on it, the better off you are for the rest of the weekend.

That run gave us a good base line to work from."

Temperatures decreased and track conditions improved slightly as the factory door slammers took to the quarter mile for the crucial

Friday evening session. A significant shift in the field was anticipated and the field of 26 Pro Stock qualifying hopefuls were quick to deliver.

Jeg Coughlin was bumped out of the show by the time he rolled his Jeg's Mail Order Cavalier into the water-box. The yellow and black

responded to the challenge with a 7.297-second pass at 189.07mph propelling him into the fifth qualifying spot.

"We knew that the night session would be crucial," said Jeg. "We had our backs against the wall, and Team Jeg's responded to the call.

We'll take a look at our notes tonight and work on tuning for the afternoon heat tomorrow."

Team Jeg's ready for return to Bandimere

Denver, pre-race: Team Jeg's drivers Jeg and Troy Coughlin eagerly anticipate a return to the high altitudes of Denver.

Both drivers have shared much success on the side of the mountain at Bandimere Speedway including the first all-Jeg's Pro Stock

final in 1999. Jeg Coughlin enters the race as the current track record holder as well as the most recent national event winner in the

ultra competitive POWERade Pro Stock class.

"Obviously it feels great to carry the momentum of the win in St. Louis into the west coast swing," said Jeg.

"Denver has traditionally been a strong track for Team Jeg's. You really have to be on your game to be fast in Denver.

If our performance in testing is any indication of what we can do this coming weekend, we should be right in the hunt for another

    victory for Team Jeg's."

Troy was also present for some pre race testing at Bandimere. The 2002 Topeka Champion is equally optimistic about his

chances in the Mile High Nationals as well.

"I'm pretty excited about returning to Bandimere," said Troy. "We learned some things in testing that should help out a

bunch when we begin qualifying this Friday. We are at a pretty crucial point in the season. A strong showing on the west

coast swing can pay big dividends in the season long POWERade points chase. We would like nothing more than to start the

swing off with a victory for Team Jeg's."

Day ends in Round 2 for Jeg

Chicago, Sunday: Jeg Coughlin's bid for a third straight title at the CARQUEST NHRA Nationals was

extinguished in the quarterfinal round Sunday when the 45-time national event winner lost to Greg Anderson

    by eight-thousandths of a second.

"We had a mean hot rod today," Coughlin said. "We just didn't have the pieces lined up to advance past

Greg and that group. They've done a great job this year, obviously, and deserve all the credit they've earned."

Coughlin posted a 6.713 at a career-best top speed of 206.67 mph in his Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier,

but it wasn't quite enough for the newly crowned back-to-back series champion, who hit the finish line in 6.704 seconds

    at 206.26 mph.

"We're looking for these thousandths of a second wins to start coming back our way," said Coughlin, four-time

finalist at this facility. "We've had seven or eight races this year that went against us by less than a hundredth

of a second. But we don't hang our chins over here in the Jeg's camp. We just get back to work."

The day started with a mild upset when No. 9 qualifier Coughlin outran No. 8 qualifier Ken Koretsky, who was

one-thousandth of a second quicker than Coughlin in time trails. Coughlin neared his career-best numbers once

again during his opening pass, zipping to a 6.688-second pass at 206.48 mph. Koretsky nearly lost control of his

car at the launch and quickly surrendered the run to Coughlin, eventually coasting past the finish line in 12.840 seconds at 66.75 mph.

Although he didn't defend the race title, Coughlin was pleased with a weekend that featured his best elapsed

time and top mph when he ran a 6.685-second E.T. in qualifying and a 206.67-mph top speed during Sunday's quarterfinals.

"We really felt like we were sneaking up on this thing," Coughlin said. "We found the electrical problem that was

hampering us in qualifying and the Jeg's Mail Order Chevy Cavalier pulled really strong all the way down the track in

Round 1. We were really happy with our performance there.

"In the second round we just weren't quite aggressive enough. We were slipping the clutch a little too much but we

still had the best corrected back-half speed of the bunch. It's hard to be too upset. It still would've been sweet to get

another win here. We'll just have to aim for Reading next weekend and try a little harder."

Jeg a big part of record field

Chicago, Friday: Making history once again, 45-time national event winner Jeg Coughlin has successfully qualified his

Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier in the middle of the quickest Pro Stock field ever assembled Saturday at Route 66

Raceway in Chicago. Coughlin used a stunning career-best pass of 6.685 seconds at 206.23 mph to become part of a group

where every driver in the elimination field managed to run their quickest pass ever.

The impressive run by the yellow-and-black team left Coughlin in ninth place in the field, meaning he'll race eighth-place

qualifier Ken Koretsky in Sunday's first round of sudden-death eliminations. Koretsky's best pass was one-thousandth of a

second better than Coughlin's run of record.

"It might have been our best run ever but to be honest we've been struggling a little bit all weekend," Coughlin said.

"There's some kind of problem plaguing us either electronically or maybe somewhere in the fuel system. The car's not real

happy when we reach the higher acceleration points.

"We're going to comb through this thing and figure out what's wrong. I know we'll get it sorted out in time for the first

round and we'll go out there and race for the win."

This record field featured the quickest and fastest runs ever in the class. New champion Greg Anderson posted a

6.661-second elapsed time in the last round and a 207.75-mph pass in the first, resetting both of Anderson's established

records for the class. Three years ago, in between his two Pro Stock title runs, Coughlin was the quickest Pro Stocker in

the world when he shocked the world with a 6.750-second run.

"We've been in Greg's shoes before and, at least in the last several races, we've been running neck-in-neck with him

," Coughlin said. "The key now is maintaining the momentum we've gained since Memphis. I know we would have been

right there with him today had we not picked up a few gremlins. The key now is to eliminate our problems and get after it tomorrow."

Coughlin opened the day with what was then his career-best pass -- a 6.703-second run at 206.89 mph, which placed

him ninth in the provisional field. The run wasn't exceptionally pretty as he swerved towards the centerline at the launch,

but the 34-year-old three-time champion straightened his car out in time to improve his previous career-best marks of 6.711

    seconds at 205.51 mph.

"We were just too aggressive again down low," Coughlin said of the first pass. "The track had a lot of bite but we probably

went for a bit too much. Fortunately, I was able to save the pass and set both of my personal best numbers. That was exciting."

Jeg looks to improve on day two

Chicago, Friday: Back-to-back defending event champion Jeg Coughlin used Friday's cool evening session to qualify

his Jeg's Mail Order Chevrolet Cavalier in the No. 3 position of the provisional field at the fourth annual CARQUEST

Auto Parts NHRA Nationals. The 34-year-old cruised through a 6.746 at 203.83 mph just before rain hit Route 66 Raceway.

"Compared to our first attempt that was much better," Coughlin said. "But we still have a lot of room for improvement.

We're happy and we're also anxious to come back tomorrow when it's supposed to be mineshaft conditions here and going much quicker."

The opening session was a shaky one for the yellow-and-black team as Coughlin posted an off-pace 6.802 at 203.92

mph to finish the round outside the top 16 in the No. 19 slot.

"We've got some Friday night homework to do," Coughlin said. "The car was off down low in first gear and it also nosed

over at the big end, even in the second run, so there are some things we need to do to prevent that from happening again.

I want to make absolutely sure we're ready to go tomorrow."

Local forecasters are calling for temperatures to stay in the 50s throughout the day Saturday, which should set up ideal

racing conditions for the carbureted Pro Stock class.

"It'll probably be one of those deals where the entire field will be reset," Coughlin said, "so all the numbers that were

posted today will most likely end up out the window. We're okay with that because at least our confidence is up. I personally

hope the weather forecast is right because the way our car has been running we can make this baby shine."

Coughlin was the No. 1 qualifier last weekend in Dallas. He's had the fastest car at each of the last two NHRA events.

Odds on Coughlin appear to be strong

Chicago, pre-race: They won't post odds at the local riverboat casinos docked near Route 66 Raceway in suburban

Chicago, but if they did, defending race winner Jeg Coughlin would have to be considered among the favorites at

this weekend's fourth annual CARQUEST Nationals.

The three-time world champion drag racer enters the race as the hottest driver in Pro Stock. For starters, Coughlin is

fresh off a top-qualifying effort in Dallas where he had both the quickest and fastest car in the field. He also arrives in the

Windy City as the two-time defending race winner, having won the fall Chicago race in both '03 and '02.

"We definitely are filled with enthusiasm," said Coughlin, who also had the fastest car at the start of the month when the

tour was in Indianapolis. "We're making great horsepower these days and I know this team will be well prepared for this race.

"Obviously, Route 66 has quickly become one of our favorite racetracks in the short time it's been around.

It's such a neat facility and the conditions are usually favorable to strong-running teams like ours.

We're excited and ready to get started, especially in light of the recent success we've had with our Jeg's Mail Order

    Chevrolet Cavalier."

Coughlin also expects to get a mental lift from the special race-within-a-race that will take place this weekend in

the form of the 20th annual Jeg's Allstar Race, whiuch his family's company sponsors. The sportsman-level event will be run

Saturday in between professional qualifying sessions.

"The Jeg's Allstar Race will be an added shot in the arm for us because there is always so much positive energy

coming out of that event," said Coughlin, who won the Allstar Race twice in his career. "You've got 64 of the best

sportsman racers in the country going head-to-head and the atmosphere will be intense."

The Jeg's Allstar Race invites the winner of each of the NHRA's eight sportsman classes from the country's

seven sanctioned divisions, plus last year's Allstar Race winners, to compete against one cash and bragging rights.

Additionally, points are awarded to each division's teams based on the performance of each driver, with a prestigious team

title handed out at day's end.

"I don' know whether I'm more excited about watching the Allstars or racing Pro Stock," Coughlin said. "Both deals will be a lot of fun."
